Legal Advice

The American Bar Association, the largest voluntary professional association in the world, has free legal help through the ABA Young Lawyers Division. If you are seeking legal help because of the disaster, the ABA Young Lawyers Division/FEMA toll-free hotlines are:

  • Louisiana: 1-800-310-7029
  • Mississippi: 1-866-255-4495
  • State Bar of Texas/Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program Texas: 1-800-504-7030

PLEASE NOTE: Please call the number for the state in which you are located. If you have been displaced due to the hurricane, call the number in the state in which you last lived. Due to the volume of calls into the Northern Gulf Coast region, these numbers may not connect upon each attempt.

You can also find online resources to help with your legal problems at National Disaster Legal Aid or LawHelp.org as well as referrals to organizations that provide free legal assistance.

Disaster Relief Concerns

  • Gustav Disaster Accountability Project: The Disaster Accountability Project's toll-free hotline (866-9-TIP-DAP) is ready for Gustav-related calls from Gulf Coast residents and relief workers. Should there be gaps in Disaster Relief services before or after landfall, individuals should use the toll-free hotlineto report the specific location and nature of the service gaps.
